Vale Morrie Chandler ONZM
MotorSport New Zealand is deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of Morrie Chandler ONZM, a towering figure whose influence on New Zealand and global motorsport spanned more than five decades.
Morrie Chandler’s name is synonymous with dedication, leadership, and an unwavering passion for the sport. Often described as one of the hardest working contributors to motorsport, his involvement extended across every level; as a competitor, organiser, administrator, team owner, and international leader.
Beginning his journey with the Northern Sports Car Club in 1962, Morrie quickly immersed himself in grassroots competition, taking part in hillclimbs, sprints, and early rally formats. His passion for the sport soon extended beyond the driver’s seat, and by 1970 he was serving as Club President, an early sign of the leadership that would define his career.
Morrie’s impact on governance was profound. Elected to the MotorSport New Zealand Executive Board in 1973, he went on to serve as President from 1977 to 1998, shaping the direction of the sport during a transformative era. His influence extended deeply into rallying, where he played a central role in the evolution and success of the Rally of New Zealand, serving as Clerk of the Course, Chairman, and a key architect of its long-term sustainability.
As a competitor, Morrie was equally respected. He contested the Rally of New Zealand annually from 1971 to 1983 and competed extensively in the New Zealand Rally Championship, achieving multiple top-ten finishes and class victories. His hands-on understanding of the sport informed his leadership, giving him rare credibility across all facets of motorsport.
Internationally, Morrie’s contribution was extraordinary. His work with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) saw him serve on the Rallies Commission, the World Rally Championship Commission, including as President, and the World Motor Sport Council. As FIA Vice-President for Sport, he helped shape the global direction of motorsport, while initiatives such as the Pirelli Star Driver programme demonstrated his commitment to developing future generations of talent.
Among his many achievements, Morrie led the financial recovery of the Rally of New Zealand following its inaugural World Championship event in 1977, ensuring its survival and long-term success. He was also instrumental in establishing the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, a competition that continues today.
In recognition of his immense contribution, Morrie was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in 1997, named President d’Honneur of MotorSport New Zealand in 1998, and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Halberg Awards in 2018.
MotorSport New Zealand President Deborah Day paid tribute to Chandler’s legacy.
“Morrie Chandler was one of the most influential figures our sport has ever known,” said Day.
“His leadership, vision, and tireless commitment helped shape not only motorsport in New Zealand, but across the world. He gave so much to the sport he loved, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Beyond motorsport, Morrie successfully led an electrical contracting company operating across New Zealand and Asia, a testament to his work ethic and leadership in all areas of life.
Morrie Chandler’s passing marks the loss of a true pioneer, whose impact on motorsport is immeasurable. He leaves behind a legacy defined by passion, service, and excellence.
MotorSport New Zealand extends its deepest condolences to Morrie’s family, friends, and the many people around the world who were touched by his remarkable life.
